Ivory Coast Dissolves Electoral Commission after Criticism

Ivory Coast’s government has dissolved the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) following sustained criticism over its management of elections.

The announcement was made by government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly after a cabinet meeting, confirming that the decision had been formally approved.

The move comes after repeated disputes about the commission’s independence and credibility. Critics—particularly opposition parties—have long argued that the CEI is too closely aligned with the ruling government, raising concerns about its ability to conduct fair and transparent elections.

Officials say dissolving the body is intended to pave the way for a new electoral system that can restore public trust.

The government plans to hold consultations to determine what structure will replace the commission, with the goal of ensuring more credible and peaceful elections in the future.

The decision follows the October 2025 presidential election, in which President Alassane Ouattara secured a fourth term with nearly 90% of the vote.

That election drew criticism from opposition groups and civil society, especially after several prominent candidates were barred from running, raising concerns about inclusiveness.

The CEI, established in 2001, has overseen all elections in Ivory Coast but has frequently been at the centre of political disputes.

Its role in the disputed 2010 election—which triggered months of violence—continues to shape perceptions of its credibility, making electoral reform a sensitive and significant political issue in the country.
