CWMBRAN, WALES – A 102-year-old great-grandfather living with dementia, Phillip Ormerod, has died in hospital days after allegedly being pushed off a stage during an altercation at the Crow’s Nest pub, a beer parlour in Cwmbran, Torfaen.

Emergency services were dispatched to the Cwmbran establishment at approximately 10:25 p.m. on August 1 following reports of an incident inside the venue.

Paramedics transported the centenarian to the hospital with severe injuries, where he subsequently succumbed to his wounds after a week and a half of treatment.

Alleged Stage Altercation and Police Investigation

Following initial inquiries into the incident, officers from Gwent Police arrested a 56-year-old man from Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, on suspicion of Section 20 assault for inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The suspect was subsequently released as police investigations continue.

The deceased’s son, Robert Ormerod, a civil engineer, revealed to newsmen on Thursday that the tragic sequence of events began when his father approached the stage area inside the pub regarding the volume of the sound equipment.

According to Robert, his father simply asked those on stage to turn the music down.

However, as the elderly man turned around to step down from the platform, he was allegedly shoved, resulting in a fractured hip and further fatal health complications.

“That’s the most upsetting part. He wasn’t going to live forever, but it’s not a nice way, obviously in pain. We want justice, of course… They must have known he was an old man. It makes you wonder what the world is coming to. He was in hospital, suffering, for a week-and-a-half. It’s not nice.”

Tributes to a Well-Known Local Character

Phillip Ormerod, who worked as a design draughtsman before his retirement, was described by family and community members as a well-known local personality.

A longtime resident of the Llanyrafon neighbourhood, where he raised his family, he continued to live independently following the passing of his wife 40 years ago, and was frequently visited by his two sons and local well-wishers.

Despite his advanced age and dementia diagnosis, he was a regular visitor to the local pub, where younger patrons often bought him drinks.

Reflecting on his father’s life and sudden passing, Robert added:
“I feel sad, even though he could be difficult because of his age and dementia. Still, you get used to him being around. Even though I suppose he wouldn’t go on forever, he would’ve carried on, I think, for a bit.”

    Police Appeal Against Speculation

In light of rising public outrage surrounding the centenarian’s death, Gwent Police have cautioned members of the public against online speculation that could jeopardise active legal proceedings or cause further distress to the victim’s family.

Senior Investigating Officer for Gwent Police, Detective Chief Inspector Shelley Comley, emphasised the sensitivity of the active homicide investigation:

“We understand the public interest in this incident but want to remind people that not only is this an active criminal investigation but there is a family at the heart of it processing the loss of a loved one. Please consider the impact that inaccurate or speculative comments, particularly online commentary, could have on them and the ongoing investigation as a whole.”

Gwent Police continue to urge any witnesses who were present at the Crow’s Nest pub on the night of August 1 to come forward with relevant statements or footage to assist detectives in establishing the complete sequence of events.
