China Approves Africa’s First Continent-Wide Yuan Trading Hub

China has approved the establishment of Africa’s first continent-wide Renminbi (RMB) trading hub, marking a significant milestone in efforts to expand direct Yuan-based trade across the African continent.

The initiative will enable businesses and financial institutions in 19 African countries to settle cross-border transactions directly in Chinese Yuan, eliminating the need to first convert payments through the U.S. dollar. The move is expected to reduce transaction costs, improve settlement speed, and enhance trade efficiency.

Under the new framework, Standard Bank Group, in partnership with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), will serve as Africa’s Renminbi Clearing Bank. The arrangement provides participating countries with direct access to China’s payment infrastructure and RMB liquidity systems, making it the first continent-wide RMB clearing mechanism in Africa.

The development aligns with China’s broader strategy to promote the international use of the Yuan through initiatives such as the Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), offshore RMB networks, and strengthened financial cooperation with partner nations.

The approval comes amid growing trade between China and Africa. Recent figures indicate that bilateral trade rose by nearly 18 percent over the past year. China has also expanded tariff-free access to imports from 53 African countries, a move expected to further boost commercial exchanges and increase demand for Yuan-denominated transactions.

According to Standard Bank, the institution processed approximately $500 million worth of Yuan transactions within its first four months of participating in CIPS, largely driven by trade-related activities.

Although the new Yuan trading hub is not expected to displace the U.S. dollar as the dominant global trade currency in the immediate future, analysts believe it will strengthen Africa’s trade links with China by lowering costs, improving payment efficiency, and expanding access to Chinese financial markets.

The initiative is expected to play an increasingly important role as China and African countries continue to deepen economic and trade cooperation.
