UN Halts Escort of Ships Through Hormuz after Vessel Comes Under Attack.

The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) has temporarily suspended its operation to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz after a commercial vessel came under attack near Oman, raising fresh concerns over the fragile ceasefire aimed at ending the Iran conflict.

The affected cargo ship reported being struck by a projectile, prompting the IMO to halt the mission while it reassesses security conditions.

The attack occurred just hours after Iran warned that only ships using routes approved by Tehran would be guaranteed safe passage through the strategic waterway.

Two U.S. officials told Reuters they believed Iranian forces fired on the vessel, although Iran has not accepted responsibility. Evergreen Marine, the ship’s operator, confirmed that the crew was safe and the vessel sustained limited damage

The IMO’s escort initiative, launched earlier this week, was designed to help hundreds of stranded ships and thousands of seafarers safely exit the Gulf through designated routes via Iranian and Omani waters.

Before the suspension, about 57 vessels carrying roughly 1,100 seafarers had successfully completed the transit.

Despite the latest security setback, some oil exports have resumed through the Strait of Hormuz, with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf producers gradually restoring shipments.

However, the renewed attack has heightened concerns over the safety of one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes and its potential impact on global oil supplies.

The suspension of the UN escort mission underscores the continued instability in the Gulf despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Maritime authorities are now reviewing safety guarantees before deciding whether to resume operations, while the international community closely monitors developments in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz
