China has sharply criticised Japan and the European Union at a United Nations Security Council meeting over their remarks on the South China Sea, accusing them of misrepresenting the situation.

According to Reports , China’s deputy UN ambassador Sun Lei dismissed their concerns as “baseless,” insisting that the region remains stable and that freedom of navigation is not under threat.

The criticism followed statements by Japan and the EU expressing concern about rising tensions in the disputed waters.

Japan warned against attempts to change the status quo by force and stressed the importance of maintaining open sea lanes, while the EU highlighted risks to global shipping routes and the international rules-based order.

Although neither explicitly named China, their comments were widely seen as directed at Beijing’s activities in the region.

In response, China accused Japan of provocative behaviour, particularly in the Taiwan Strait, and criticised Tokyo’s evolving security policies, including increased military spending and relaxed arms export rules.

The exchange underscores growing geopolitical friction over maritime claims and security in East and Southeast Asia, with competing narratives over stability, military activity, and international law.
