China has hinted at expanding its naval power by releasing a promotional video suggesting the development of a fourth aircraft carrier, which could be its first nuclear-powered vessel.
The video, titled “Into the Deep,” was issued ahead of the 77th anniversary of the Chinese navy and featured fictional characters whose names resemble China’s existing carriers Liaoning, Shandong, and Fujian.
A new character, interpreted as a symbolic reference to a nuclear-powered carrier, has fueled speculation that China is preparing its next-generation warship.
Alongside this, Chinese authorities reaffirmed plans to strengthen and develop thousands of islands under their control, as part of a broader push to boost maritime power, secure natural resources, and reinforce territorial claims.
Officials said the country would continue building infrastructure and improving governance across more than 11,000 islands, many located along its coastline and in contested waters.
The move comes amid ongoing regional tensions, particularly in areas like the South China Sea, where China has already built artificial islands and military facilities.Despite these efforts, neighbouring countries and allies including the United States and regional partners have continued military activities and presence in disputed zones, highlighting that China’s growing assertiveness has not reduced opposition to its territorial ambitions.
