China has intensified its diplomatic engagement over the ongoing Iran conflict as it prepares for a high-stakes summit between President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to Reuters, Beijing is carefully balancing its approach maintaining ties with Iran while avoiding friction with Washington largely due to its heavy dependence on Middle Eastern oil and broader geopolitical interests.

China’s strategy has included promoting peace initiatives and engaging regional actors, with reports indicating it played a role in encouraging Iran to attend recent peace talks.

However, Beijing has stopped short of taking on a more direct role, such as guaranteeing a ceasefire, despite requests from Tehran. Analysts say this measured stance allows China to preserve influence on both sides while keeping diplomatic channels open ahead of the planned summit.

The upcoming Xi–Trump meeting is expected to focus on practical outcomes like trade particularly U.S. exports such as aircraft and agriculture rather than more contentious issues.

China hopes the talks will help stabilize bilateral relations and possibly shape U.S. positions on sensitive matters like Taiwan, all while continuing its cautious diplomacy in the Iran conflict to avoid disrupting either partnership.
