Iran Proposes Safe Passage for Ships Through Oman Side of Hormuz

Iran has proposed allowing ships to safely transit through the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz without risk of attack, according to a source familiar with Tehran’s negotiations with the United States.

The offer is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation in the conflict, but it is conditional on Washington meeting certain Iranian demands as part of a broader agreement.

The proposal comes after months of disruption caused by the conflict, which began in late February and severely impacted global energy flows.

The Strait of Hormuz—through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass—has seen traffic curtailed, leaving hundreds of vessels and thousands of seafarers stranded in the region.

If accepted, the plan would mark a shift from Iran’s earlier hardline stance, which included threats to restrict or control passage through the strategic waterway. However, key uncertainties remain, including whether all vessels—such as those linked to Israel—would be granted safe passage, and whether hazards like mines would be cleared, leaving the proposal’s full impact still unclear.
