The long-standing industrial action staged 31 days ago by the Organized Labour in Cross River State has been called off.

The strike which caused a total shut down of the workforce and in turn crippled the economy of the state was suspended today, November 11, 2021, by the combined leadership of Nigerian Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress as well as the Traditional Rulers Council.

Comrade Godwin Otei, Chairman of Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC) while addressing newsmen at the State Secretariat of Association of Senior Civil servants of Nigeria and Trade Union Congress, stated that they have looked at the situation of things in the state and decided to agree to suspend the strike due to the meeting they had with the Traditional Rulers Council (TRC) who mediated for peace between the Labour and Government.

“We have never had it this bad, we were expecting a better Cross River handed over by the previous government, instead, it got worst, every aspect of the lives of Cross Riverians were affected and everything depreciated – Otei said.

Furthermore, Otei said that in the interest of Cross Riverians, they had to reach an agreement with the government so there could be room for the implementation of the agreements so far reached.

However, comrade John Ukpepi, Chairman of NLC in the state who suspended the strike said they have not called off the industrial action but only suspended it for 5 months as they hope that government will not fail on its part.
