The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) branch, has suspended the industrial action it embarked on May 19, 2026, bringing to an end about 8 weeks of academic disruption.

The decision to suspend the strike was reached on Tuesday 21 July, 2026, during an emergency Congress of the Union held at the Calabar campus of the university.

According to reports, the development follows sustained engagements between the University Management, the Cross River State Government, and the leadership of the Union aimed at resolving the issues that triggered the industrial dispute.

As part of the reconciliation efforts, the Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Professor Francisca Bassey, led members of the University’s Management and the leadership of the ASUU UNICROSS Branch to a closed-door meeting with the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, last week.

In a related engagement, the Vice Chancellor also led student leaders to a separate meeting with the Governor, where discussions centered on the impact of the strike on students and the need for a lasting resolution.

The suspension of the industrial action is understood to be a direct outcome of assurances and commitments made by Governor Otu during the meetings.

The decision is part of efforts to restore industrial harmony within the institution and reflects the collaborative commitment of the Cross River State Government, the University Management, and the Union to safeguarding the University’s academic calendar.

The University also acknowledged the patience, understanding, and constructive engagement demonstrated by students, members of the academic community, and other stakeholders throughout the duration of the strike.

With the suspension now in effect, academic activities are expected to resume across all campuses of the University, allowing students to return to lectures and other academic engagements.

The University Management indicated that further details regarding the resumption of lectures and other academic schedules will be communicated in due course.
