Nigeria has filed criminal charges against six individuals over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu, according to a Calabaronline report.
Prosecutors brought 13 charges against the suspects—mostly former security officials—including treason, terrorism, and terrorism financing, accusing them of planning a violent coup against the government in 2025.
The accused include a retired army major-general and other security personnel. Authorities say they conspired to “levy war against the state” in an attempt to unseat the president.
All six suspects are currently in custody, while a seventh suspect, a former state governor, is reportedly at large and accused of helping conceal the plot.
The case is linked to an earlier alleged coup attempt uncovered in 2025, when several military officers were arrested.
It marks one of the most serious treason prosecutions in recent years, coming at a time of heightened security concerns and political tensions in Nigeria.
