Team Nigeria experienced a mixed outing on Day 2 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with swimming taking the spotlight as national record holder Abduljabar Adama delivered the country’s best performance of the day.
Adama qualified for the men’s 50m freestyle semifinal after finishing third in his heat with a time of 22.67 seconds, keeping Nigeria’s hopes alive in the pool.
Adama later returned for the semifinal but narrowly missed out on a place in the final, finishing sixth in 22.44 seconds.
He also competed in the men’s 100m butterfly alongside fellow Nigerian Colins Ebingha, but both swimmers failed to progress after finishing outside the qualification places.
Clinton Opute also featured in the 50m freestyle, ending his heat in sixth place with a time of 23.15 seconds to become the second reserve for the semifinals.
In boxing, Nigerian fighters continued their Commonwealth Games campaign, aiming to build on the country’s impressive start to the competition.
The boxing team remained in contention as athletes sought qualification to the next rounds across different weight categories.
Nigeria’s men’s wheelchair basketball team also saw action but suffered a heavy 16-1 defeat to hosts Scotland, highlighting the tough competition at the Games.
Despite the setback, the team remains focused on improving in its remaining fixtures.
Although Team Nigeria did not add to its medal tally on Day 2, Abduljabar Adama’s semifinal appearance in the 50m freestyle was a major highlight.
The Nigerian contingent will now look to bounce back in the coming days as events continue across swimming, boxing and other disciplines.
