Canada booked a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Africa 1-0 with a dramatic stoppage-time winner in their Round of 32 clash.

Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio struck in the 92nd minute to seal Canada’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match, breaking South African hearts after a fiercely contested encounter.

The match in Los Angeles was a tense and tactical affair, with both teams creating few clear-cut opportunities.

Canada enjoyed more possession and threatened before the break, while South Africa remained disciplined in defence and looked set to force the game into extra time.

With seconds remaining, Eustáquio collected a loose ball outside the penalty area and fired a powerful shot beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, sparking wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.

The late strike ensured Canada became the first team to secure a place in the tournament’s Round of 16.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch praised his players’ resilience and determination, describing them as “Canadian heroes” after they overcame a stubborn South African side.

The co-hosts were strengthened by the returns of Alphonso Davies and Moïse Bombito, who recovered from injury in time for the knockout fixture.

For South Africa, the defeat brought an end to a memorable campaign that saw Bafana Bafana reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

Canada will now face the winner of the Netherlands versus Morocco Round of 32 match as they continue their historic run at the tournament
