The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has pledged full support for an anti-drug abuse campaign led by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), signaling renewed efforts to combat substance abuse across campuses in Cross River State.

This commitment was made during a strategic meeting on April 2, 2026, between the university’s management and the Joint Campus Council (JCC) leadership of NANS. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration ahead of the launch of the Drug-Free Campus Movement.

Speaking at the session, UNICROSS Vice Chancellor, Francisca Bassey, reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to student welfare and the fight against substance abuse. She described the initiative as both timely and essential, assuring student leaders of the university’s full backing.

She emphasized that student health and safety remain top priorities, noting ongoing improvements at the institution’s Medical Centre to better meet students’ needs. She also pledged logistical assistance, including transportation, to ensure the campaign’s success.

Earlier, NANS JCC Chairman, Victor Asuquo, said the meeting was part of efforts to deepen collaboration ahead of the campaign’s rollout.

According to him, the initiative will officially begin on April 10, 2026, with a street rally from Mary Slessor Roundabout to Millennium Park. The campaign will also involve the selection of 16 student ambassadors—one from each campus—to lead advocacy efforts and connect affected students with support services.

Asuquo further revealed that NANS is exploring a partnership with the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital to provide affordable rehabilitation services for students. Additional collaborations are being pursued with key agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Ministry of Health, and the National Orientation Agency.

He noted that UNICROSS, given its large student population and multi-campus structure, is strategically positioned to drive awareness and ensure the campaign achieves meaningful impact.
