The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has reassured parents and students of the Faculty of Dentistry that efforts are underway to ensure proper placement for all affected students.

He gave this assurance during a meeting with stakeholders at the institution’s Council Chambers, where he expressed confidence that the challenges facing the faculty would soon be resolved.

Prof. Offiong emphasized management’s commitment to pursuing both internal and external solutions, noting that while some students have already secured placement in other institutions, those yet to be placed should continue attending ongoing lectures within the faculty.

The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government has shown interest in supporting the faculty’s situation.

He added that the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences is actively engaging with key stakeholders, including the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other universities, to explore viable solutions. According to him, the university is also expecting an MDCN accreditation team to assess the faculty, particularly in relation to possible quota increases, as seen in other institutions.

Prof. Offiong also assured that ongoing work on the medical hostels would be completed using the university’s resources, reaffirming management’s commitment to improving infrastructure.

He urged students to remain calm, return to lectures, and cooperate with the Provost, while cautioning against the spread of unverified information on social media, which could damage the institution’s reputation.

The Vice-Chancellor appealed to both parents and students for patience and constructive engagement as efforts continue to resolve the issues.

Speaking on behalf of the parents, Dr. Mrs. Rebecca Enouh commended the Vice-Chancellor for his openness and willingness to address their concerns. She noted that parents remain deeply concerned about their children’s future but appreciate the steps being taken.

Dr. Enouh outlined key issues discussed at the meeting, including student placement, quota increases, transfers, induction, accreditation, and professional examinations, and urged the university management to ensure a seamless resolution.
