The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has urged alumni of the UNICAL Demonstration Primary School (UDPS) to partner with the institution in restoring the school’s past excellence.

He made the call while receiving members of the UDPS Alumni during a courtesy visit to the Council Chambers, stressing that reviving the school requires a collective effort beyond the university management.

Prof. Offiong noted that alumni remain critical stakeholders whose roles extend beyond support to serving as ambassadors that uphold and promote the school’s legacy and values.

He further emphasized the need for increased advocacy and awareness within the host community to boost enrollment, pointing out that many parents may not fully appreciate the school’s potential. According to him, sustained sensitization is necessary to rebuild confidence and attract more pupils.

The Vice Chancellor disclosed that during his familiarization visits, he had identified key challenges affecting the school and had already begun taking steps to address them.

He assured the alumni that concerns such as the school gate and access routes would be reviewed to improve accessibility for pupils and parents, while also pledging enhanced security within the school.

Commending the alumni for their dedication and contributions, Prof. Offiong described their efforts as commendable and vital to the school’s progress. He assured them of inclusion in future plans, noting that collaboration would be encouraged to enable meaningful contributions.

Earlier, the leader of the UDPS Alumni, Prof. Affiong Henry, appreciated the Vice Chancellor for granting them an audience and congratulated him on his appointment as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the university. She noted that his leadership comes at a crucial time when the school requires renewed focus.

Prof. Henry highlighted the alumni’s past contributions and reaffirmed their commitment to doing more for their alma mater, describing UDPS as a foundational institution that has nurtured many successful individuals.

She also revealed that the school will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year, describing the milestone as both a moment of celebration and an opportunity for reflection and renewal.

As part of the golden jubilee, she said the alumni intend to collaborate with the school on a comprehensive refurbishment project aimed at improving infrastructure, while reaffirming their continued partnership with the school board to ensure its effective operation.
