A student in the Department of Library Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Social Sciences Education, University of Calabar, Otu, Ime Monday has been suspended by the school management.

The notice of suspension was conveyed in a separate letter dated February 21, 2024, and signed by the University Registrar.

According to the letter from the institution’s Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, Ime was suspended by the Vice Chancellor for going against the Management’s directive that proscribed the position of “Class Representative” in the citadel of learning.

In a report sent to the Vice Chancellor, as conveyed by the letter, the culprit was alleged to have sent text messages on WhatsApp inviting students to a drinking joint in Calabar for “induction into Class Rep Forum of National Association of Library Science Students(NALISS) department.

The letter also stated that the venue of the meeting was slated for Eta-Agbor Layout Overhead Tank by 4 pm on the 8th of February, 2024, adding that the invitees were asked to come along with a bottle of Gordon Dry gin, a bottle of groundnut and a foundation levy of N2,000 (Two Thousand Naira).

As a result of this, Prof. Florence Obi, First Female Vice Chancellor and the 11th Vice Chancellor, and the Constituted Authorities hereby approved the suspension of Otu Ime Monday from studies.

In the same vein, Prosper Ndubueze of the Faculty of Pharmacy is also suspended from studies for assaulting Faith Chinedu, a female student of the University, thereby causing bodily harm to her.

The act of lawlessness, according to the suspension letter, is not acceptable in the University as it contravenes the Students’ code of conduct contained in the Students’ Handbook.
