Rats Infest Gaza’s Tent Camps, Biting Children and Spreading Disease

A recent report highlights a worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where large numbers of displaced people living in makeshift tent camps are facing a severe rat infestation.

With more than two million Palestinians displaced by conflict, many are sheltering in overcrowded camps or damaged homes, creating conditions where rodents thrive.

Residents say rats are biting children and adults while they sleep, particularly targeting fingers and toes, and destroying scarce personal belongings.

Some families have resorted to staying awake in shifts to protect one another, as traps have proven largely ineffective in the devastated environment.

Health officials warn the infestation is contributing to the spread of diseases such as rat-bite fever and leptospirosis, with hospitals already recording thousands of related infections.

The crisis is being worsened by collapsed sanitation systems, accumulated waste, and limited access to pest-control supplies, raising fears the situation could deteriorate further, especially with rising temperatures.
