Pope Leo has condemned what he described as a “sharp intensification” of the war in Ukraine, expressing deep concern over the growing violence and the suffering of civilians caught in the conflict.

Speaking during his weekly audience at the Vatican, the pontiff said he was closely following developments in the war with great anxiety.

The pope stressed that war does not solve problems but instead worsens them, creating more pain, hatred and destruction.

He lamented the increasing attacks involving missiles and drones, warning that innocent people continue to bear the heaviest burden of the fighting.

Pope Leo also expressed solidarity with civilians who have been killed or injured in recent attacks across Ukraine.

He said homes, places of worship and communities were being devastated as the conflict escalates, adding that hopes for peace are being shattered alongside buildings and infrastructure.

The pontiff renewed his appeal for dialogue and peaceful solutions, urging leaders involved in the conflict to abandon violence.

His remarks are part of a series of strong statements he has made in recent months against wars and rising global tensions.

Pope Leo, the first American pope, has repeatedly called for humanitarian relief and an end to armed conflicts around the world.

His latest comments come amid renewed fighting in Ukraine and growing international concern over the humanitarian impact of the prolonged war.
