CALABAR – Operatives of the Cross River State Police Command have arrested 54-year-old Godwin Okoko in connection with the brutal murder of an enforcement official belonging to the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA).

The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in an official bulletin signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police.

The swift breakthrough comes less than 24 hours after the fatal assault sent shockwaves through the capital city.

The official police report sheds new light on the severity of Monday morning’s operational altercation, revealing that the suspect did not target a lone individual but launched an armed assault against an entire regulatory team.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. along the Marian Hill corridor in Calabar.

TRAMRA officials were actively conducting lawful traffic enforcement operations when they intercepted a commercial mini-bus driven by Okoko for a suspected traffic violation.

Upon receiving an urgent distress call from the scene of the crisis, tactical team operatives from the state command were dispatched to reinforce the embattled traffic team, successfully cordoning off the area and pinning down the suspect before he could escape the metropolitan area.

The State CID has already commenced background profiling and weapon recovery protocols as they prepare a comprehensive criminal prosecution file for the Ministry of Justice.

The leadership of the Cross River State Police Command used the medium to issue a stern warning to commercial transport unions, private motorists, and the general public against launching retaliatory or unprovoked attacks on uniform personnel.

The command emphasised that state traffic wardens, environmental officers, and civil security agents are protected by law, and any attempt to compromise their physical safety while discharging state duties will be met with the maximum weight of the penal code.

With the primary suspect safely behind bars, administrative tension between transport operators and civil regulators in Calabar is expected to ease.

TRAMRA management has expressed relief over the rapid police intervention, noting that the tracking and arrest of Okoko reassures their field officers that the state will provide full security backing as they continue their mandate to regulate traffic and eliminate gridlock across the ancient city.
