Iran Threatens to Retaliate Against Gulf Ports for US Blockade

Iran has warned it could retaliate against ports across the Gulf region if the United States proceeds with a planned naval blockade targeting Iranian shipping, according to a Reuters report.

The threat follows Washington’s announcement that it will block vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports after high-level talks between the two countries failed to produce a breakthrough, raising fears of a wider regional escalation.

Iranian officials said that if their maritime security is undermined, no port in the Gulf would be considered safe, signalling the possibility of attacks on key infrastructure in neighbouring states.

The warning comes amid an already fragile ceasefire after weeks of conflict involving U.S. and allied forces, with tensions heightened by Iran’s control measures in the Strait of Hormuz and its readiness to deploy military assets such as missiles and drones.

The escalating standoff has already rattled global markets, with oil prices rising sharply and shipping activity in the Gulf declining. Analysts warn that the blockade could disrupt millions of barrels of oil exports daily, while Iran continues to demand sanctions relief and recognition of its regional control, setting the stage for further confrontation if diplomatic efforts remain stalled.
