Iran seizes vessel in Strait of Hormuz, defying US naval superiority

Iran has seized at least one commercial vessel in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, in a move reported by Calabaronline as a direct challenge to U.S. naval dominance in the region.

The incident, carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was captured in video footage showing armed commandos boarding a large cargo ship from speedboats, underscoring Tehran’s tightening control over the waterway after the collapse of diplomatic efforts to reopen it.

According to Calabaronline, the seizure is part of a broader escalation following U.S. actions, including a naval blockade and earlier interceptions of Iranian-linked vessels.

Iran said the ships were detained for alleged maritime violations and warned that maintaining  order and safety in the strait is a red line.

The standoff reflects a cycle of retaliation, with both sides targeting shipping in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

The development highlights how Iran is using asymmetric naval tactics—such as fast attack boats and surprise boarding operations—to counter the superior U.S. Navy presence.

Analysts say these methods make it difficult for conventional naval forces to fully secure commercial shipping, raising risks for global oil supply, as roughly one-fifth of the world’s energy trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
