World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced another remarkable result by holding Uruguay to a 2-2 draw in a Group H match.

After already earning a goalless draw against Spain, the African side showed they could compete with another football powerhouse.

Cape Verde made history in the 21st minute when Kevin Pina scored their first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.

His stunning long-range free kick beat Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and gave the underdogs a shock lead.

Uruguay responded strongly before halftime. Maximiliano Araujo equalized with a header after reacting quickest to a loose ball, and shortly before the break Agustin Canobbio finished off Araujo’s pass to put the South Americans ahead

Cape Verde refused to give up and found an equalizer in the second half.

Substitute Helio Varela capitalized on a costly defensive mistake and scored into an empty net after a misplaced back pass and goalkeeping error making it 2-2.

The draw leaves both Uruguay and Cape Verde on two points in Group H, behind Spain on four points.

Cape Verde’s unbeaten start has given them a realistic chance of reaching the knockout stage, while Uruguay now face pressure heading into their final group match against Spain.
