Second seed and tournament favourite Alexander Zverev faces one of the biggest tests of his French Open campaign when he takes on rising Czech star Jakub Mensik in the first men’s semi-final at Roland Garros.

With several top contenders already eliminated, Zverev has emerged as the leading candidate to capture the first Grand Slam title of his career after producing a dominant run through the tournament, losing only one set on his way to the last four.

Mensik, however, has been one of the revelations of the tournament. The 20-year-old has showcased maturity beyond his years, defeating highly rated Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in straight sets to become the youngest Czech man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in decades.

His powerful serve, aggressive baseline game and growing confidence have made him a dangerous opponent for anyone left in the draw.

The German enters the clash with greater experience and the advantage of a smoother route through the tournament.

Zverev has looked composed throughout the fortnight and knows that a victory would move him one step closer to ending his long wait for a major title.

Observers regard him as the most established player remaining after a series of surprising exits by other leading contenders.

The second semi-final guarantees an Italian finalist as compatriots Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Arnaldi face each other in a historic all-Italian showdown.

Cobolli reached his maiden Grand Slam semi-final after an impressive comeback victory over Félix Auger-Aliassime, while Arnaldi has enjoyed a breakthrough run of his own in Paris.

With a place in Sunday’s final at stake, Friday’s action promises high drama on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Whether Zverev’s experience prevails or Mensik continues his remarkable rise, the winner will meet either Cobolli or Arnaldi in what is set to be a fresh and unexpected French Open final.
