    UNICAL Inaugurates 2026 CUECO Committee Ahead of SUG Elections

    The Students Affairs Division of the University of Calabar has officially inaugurated the 2026 Calabar University Electoral Committee (CUECO) ahead of the forthcoming Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections.

    The inauguration ceremony, held at the Students Affairs Division, was presided over by the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Eyo Mensah, who charged members of the committee to uphold transparency, fairness, credibility and accountability throughout the electoral process.

    Speaking during the inauguration, Prof. Mensah stated that the University management remains committed to ensuring a peaceful, free and transparent electoral process that truly reflects the will of the students. He emphasized the importance of integrity and neutrality in the discharge of the committee’s responsibilities.

    The committee is chaired by Prof. Peter Ubi of the Department of Economics. Other members of the committee include Prof Idom Thomas Inyabri of the English and Literary Studies Department as Alternate Chairman; Daniel Onihana of Student Affairs; Barr. Jonas Abuo, Director of the Legal Unit; Dr. Maxwell Eba of the History Department; Dr. Theophilus Adejumo of the Political Science Department; James Brown, Hall Administrator of Hall 3; Dr. Eyo Essien, Director of ICT; Dr. Emmanuel Duke of the Chemistry Department; Wolo Darwin representing NANS; Kekayo Odum representing the SUG; Chukwubike Fortune representing the SUG; Dr. Bennyta Ikpeme of the Faculty of Dentistry; Precious Bamidele of the Linguistics Department; while Imeh Bassey of Student Affairs serves as Secretary of the committee.

    According to the Dean, the committee has been mandated to conduct the elections through an electronic voting system, screen aspirants, supervise electoral activities and submit a comprehensive report of the exercise to the University management upon completion.

    Prof. Mensah further urged all students and stakeholders to cooperate with the committee and maintain peace before, during and after the elections.

    The inaugural meeting of the committee was held at the Students Affairs Division, University of Calabar, with members pledging their commitment to delivering a credible and student-oriented electoral process.
