South Africa have qualified for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history after edging South Korea 1-0 in their final Group A match at Monterrey Stadium.

The historic victory secured second place in the group and ended decades of frustration for Bafana Bafana, who had previously failed to advance beyond the group stage in their World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002 and 2010.

After a tightly contested first half, South Africa gradually grew into the game and looked more dangerous after the break.

Their disciplined defensive display frustrated a South Korean side that enjoyed more possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances.

The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko finished off a well-worked move, converting a precise pass from Tshepang Moremi to score what proved to be the winning goal.

The strike sparked celebrations among South African players and fans as the team moved closer to a historic achievement.

South Korea introduced captain Son Heung-min at halftime in an attempt to turn the match around, but despite sustained pressure and several opportunities, they were unable to find an equaliser.

South Africa’s defence stood firm, producing crucial clearances and saves to preserve the lead.

The result leaves South Africa second in Group A with four points behind group winners Mexico and sets up a Round of 32 clash against Canada on June 28.

South Korea finished third with three points and remained hopeful of progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos praised his players’ tactical discipline and described the qualification as a landmark moment for South African football.
