An unidentified armed robber has been set ablaze by unknown people along Mayne Avenue by Inyang Street, a popular street at Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The area is largely residential. And, most residents and commuters in the region said  they woke up to meet the bandit was burnt to ashes already

However, an eye witness who pleaded to be anonymous said the incident occurred as about 4:00AM on Monday morning.

Additionally, another eye witnessed said; “as they were beating him, he was begging that they should forgive him he will not do it again. He is only a thief that begged for mercy when arrested.”

A third could be heard saying that: “Though jungle justice is not right they have no option as some of the robbers while they come robbing they don’t only take away valuables but rape, shoot and kill their victims.”

As at the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police command in Cross River State is yet to issue a statement on the incident

Also, as at press time, the charred remains of the victim were yet to be evacuated by State authorities.

Following concerns that State authorities were doing little to stem the tide of petty thievery, armed robbery and kidnapping in Cross River, the rate of mob actions increased. However, this is the first reported act of jungle justice in 2021.
