The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), in collaboration with key partners, conducted a damage and needs assessment in Odonget and Isabang communities of Obubra LGA following a security crisis that occurred on March 27, 2026.

The exercise, carried out on April 9, involved agencies including NEMA, the Nigeria Police, NCFRMI, and the Nigerian Red Cross.

Findings revealed that the crisis led to significant human and material losses, with 29 deaths recorded—mostly in Isabang—and over 560 people affected.

Many residents were displaced, either partially or completely, as violence disrupted peace, livelihoods, and social stability in the area.

The assessment also showed widespread destruction of infrastructure, with 39 houses damaged or destroyed, leaving several families without shelter.

Economic activities were severely affected, particularly local trade and informal mining operations, which are key sources of income for residents.

CR-SEMA Director General, Antigha Edem Gill, expressed concern over the scale of the humanitarian impact, noting that the assessment would guide timely interventions.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting victims and emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among stakeholders.

The report identified urgent needs including shelter, food, healthcare, and psychosocial support, while also highlighting gaps in current response efforts.

It recommended immediate relief deployment and long-term measures such as rebuilding homes, strengthening peacebuilding initiatives, improving mining regulation, and establishing early warning systems to prevent future crises.
