Chelsea Name Xabi Alonso New Head Coach on Four-Year Deal

Premier League side Chelsea F.C. have reportedly agreed a four-year deal to appoint former Real Madrid CF and Bayer 04 Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso as their new head coach.

Reports  say the agreement was reached after weeks of discussions between Chelsea’s hierarchy and the Spaniard.

Chelsea began searching for a new manager after the dismissal of Liam Rosenior in April, following a poor run of results and growing frustration among supporters.

The club’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Manchester City F.C. in the FA Cup final further increased pressure on the ownership to make major changes ahead of next season.

Alonso arrives with a strong reputation after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga and German Cup double during the 2023-24 campaign.

Although his short spell at Real Madrid ended earlier this year, many football analysts still regard him as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches because of his tactical style and ability to develop young players.

Reports also indicate Chelsea are prepared to hand Alonso greater authority over transfers and squad decisions, something recent managers at Stamford Bridge reportedly lacked under the BlueCo ownership structure.

Sources close to the negotiations say Alonso wanted assurances about his level of influence before accepting the role.

If officially confirmed, Alonso would become Chelsea’s fifth permanent manager since the club’s takeover in 2022, following spells under Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.

The appointment is seen as a major attempt by Chelsea to rebuild after a turbulent season that has left the club struggling for European qualification.
