Atlético Madrid and Arsenal FC played out a tense 1–1 draw at the Metropolitano Stadium in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Both sides approached the game cautiously, focusing on defensive discipline and limiting clear-cut chances in a tightly contested opening phase.

Arsenal took the lead just before halftime when Viktor Gyökeres calmly converted a penalty after being brought down inside the box.

The goal gave the visitors a crucial advantage heading into the break, rewarding their patience and structured attacking play

Atlético Madrid responded strongly in the second half, pushing forward in search of an equaliser.

Their efforts paid off when Julián Álvarez scored from the penalty spot following a handball decision against Arsenal defender Ben White, bringing the hosts level and reigniting the contest.

The closing stages saw late drama as Arsenal had another penalty appeal overturned after a VAR review, leading to frustration on the bench and among players.

Despite Atlético’s late pressure, Arsenal held firm defensively to secure a valuable away draw, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the decisive second leg in London.
