The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested an Abuja-based house agent, Hajia Adama Adamu, over an alleged N288 million property fraud.

The agency disclosed this in a statement shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, stating that operatives from its Ilorin Zonal Directorate apprehended the suspect following a petition.

According to the EFCC, Adamu allegedly collected the sum from a complainant, Alhaji Tanko Yawale, under the guise of facilitating the purchase of a property in Abuja.

The commission said the transaction was linked to a property located at House 31, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro, Abuja.

It further revealed that after receiving the money, the suspect allegedly failed to provide valid documentation for the property and became evasive, raising concerns that led to a formal complaint.

The EFCC noted that property fraud remains a persistent issue in Nigeria’s real estate sector, particularly in major cities like Abuja, where fraudulent agents often exploit unsuspecting buyers.

The commission added that it has stepped up efforts to tackle land and housing scams, urging the public to always verify property ownership and documentation before making payments.
